A Summer Meme

Mom tagged me for a meme (what’s a meme? I don’t know, but I’ll answer the questions)

1.) What first tells you that summer is here?
When Mom starts wearing shorts, and has more time to take me on walks.  Also, I pant more.

2.) Name five of your favorite distinctively summer habits or customs.
*Going on long walks around a lake
*Going up to the Big Lake Far Away and Staying in a Room.
*Going to something called a “Dog Park”
*Riding in a Car with my Nose out the Window
*Chasing Rabbits

3.) What is your favorite smell of summer?
Favorite smell??? I like all smells.  I like the smell of holes and wet leaves after rain, and toads on the road, and trees.  I like the smell of the lake, and all the people we met, and the puppies, especially labs!  they are so cute!

4.) What is your favorite taste of summer?
Rabbit!!!
runner up:  ice cubes

5.) Favorite summer memory?
I live in the moment, so I’m not sure what a memory is.  But I like when we starting going to that place called a “Dog Park” together, when I was little, and met all kinds of dog friends and people friends every morning.  It was so fun!  We used to go every morning.

6.) Extreme heat or extreme cold? Which would you choose and why?
I like cold better, because of rolling around in the snow, but I know mom likes summer, and I like summer because mom and dad have more time.

7.) What books do you plan to read for the season?
I am not going to read any books, and I wish Mom wouldn’t either.  Except books about dogs.

8.) How does the summer affect your faith? Is it a hindrance?
Summer is good because my Mom has more time and we do more things together.  I think it is always good to do more things with my people.

I go to the farm

…. but mom forgot her camera.  Too bad!

On Sunday after Mom came home we got in the car (I got the back seat) and drove and drove and drove.  We drove on a big road for a long time.  When I looked around, I saw there was a lot of space to run — more than I had ever seen before.  I didn’t know where we were headed, but I was patient and waited until we stopped in front of a little white house.

I got out of the car and sniffed the people who lived there.  There were some awfully good smells coming out of the kitchen.  And I made sure to sniff everything in the living room, to make sure it was ok.  I ran upstairs and downstairs to check out the whole house, and then sat under the table while they ate dinner.

After I ate we were all sitting in the living room and I was playing with a ball, when all of a sudden more people were standing at the door making a loud noise!  And three of them were Boys!  They were nice boys and they wanted to pet me a lot.  I felt like a Very Important Dog when they petted me, so I sat just as straight and as still as I could.

Everyone else ate cake and ice cream and Mom seemed happy.  I was glad about that.  Then we all went upstairs and went to sleep.

The next day we went to ANOTHER house, out where all the running space was.  There was a bigger house and lots of big buildings.  I sat behind Dad’s chair, just because it felt better to do that.

Then we went to one of the big buildings where a Strange Man showed us something in the corner.  There was a cat and five little furry things that looked kind of like big furry rats!  I didn’t think they were cute.  Actually, I think they looked yummy.

One of them ran out toward me, so of course, I started to scoop it upin my mouth, until mom yelled at me, so I dropped it.  Then SHE picked it up, and she acted like she LIKED it.  She petted it a little, even.  Weird.

I really wanted to see those furry little things again, but Mom wouldn’t let me.  I don’t know why.

I hope I get to go back there again.  There was so much space to run, and I could hear and smell other Dogs around, so it must be Good.

And there were Boys.  Boys are always good

The Best Dog Died

….and I am sure that my friend Cub is in Dog Heaven.

I am sure that Cub is in the place where there are no fences

and running and playing and chasing balls

Cub is playing with other dogs and people

And no matter how far Cub runs

she will always find her way home

and the gate is open for her

I write a poem!

My job

When I go out

It is my job

to pick up all the sticks

on the street

especially the sticks

that are twice as big as me

When I go out

it is my job

to drag the sticks

as far as I can

for as long as I can

and then drop them

and smile

When I go out

it is my job

to notice every rabbit

squirrel

bird

(oh birds! in every color chirp and flutter!)

and chipmunk

and the chipmunk holes

I have so many jobs

and these are only the ones

without balls

The End

Love, Scout

My Easter

I got a bath so that I would smell good.  I’m not sure what the big deal is about smelling good, but Mom seems to think it is important.

People came over one Day.  They ate food and petted me and played with me.  The Boy came over too.  It is always a good day when the Boy comes over.

No food fell on the floor.  Oh, well!  I still got dinner.

The next day I went to church, just to visit.  I met a few people.  One lady Mom particularly wanted me to meet.  At first I was shy, but after a little while I decided to let her scratch my tummy.

Her dog died recently.  She needed a tummy to scratch.  I was glad to do it.  It’s one of my jobs.

I wish people would realize that these things are important.  Dogs do.  We realize that one of our jobs is to let people scratch our tummies.

I still Love Them

Sometimes they say, “I promise I will take you on a longer walk tomorrow.”

And then they don’t.

Sometimes they say, “I promise I will take you to the park soon.”

And then they don’t.

But I still love them.  I still want to be around them.  All they have to do is get down on the floor, and I wag my tail so hard everyone can hear me down the block!

And when mom fills up my food bowl, I run around and jump up and down!

I’m always excited to see them, and to get and give loves and pets from them.

And I know that someday soon we’ll take those long walks and I’ll get to run at the park more often, and take rides in the car, too.

oh, and by the way:  it’s snowing.

It’s very pretty outside:  big white thick flakes of sticky, roll-around-in snow are falling down.

There is so much to be thankful for.

Even when they forget me, I still love them.

The Middle Name Meme

Grendel (who is the most awesomely great dog) tagged my Mom for this “Meme” about middle names.  I don’t know what a “meme” is, and I don’t really have a middle name, but Mom said I am “the Wonder dog” and the middle word in that is Wonder, so we will use the word Wonder.

W – Writhe.  I writhe in the snow, and on the ice, too.  Sometimes we’ll be walking along and suddenly — wham — I am on the ice, on my side, being dragged along.  I like to writhe.   The cold feels good on my fur.

O – Only.  I am an only dog.  I like other dogs, don’t get me wrong.  But I also like being Special.  I would like other dogs to come and visit me, but maybe not live here.

N – Naps.  I do like to take naps.  Doesn’t everyone?  I like to take naps on my bed, under the table, on the living room floor, on the love-seat.

D – Daring.  I am a daring and devilish dog, especially when I try to Escape.  I also like to make up Games. Also D is for Dog, which is God spelled backwards.  I this this is important, but I don’t know why.

E – Energetic.  Naps are great, but so are playing with dogs, running down the street and in all of the neighbors back yards, chasing rabbits and squirrels and oh – so many things!  I can be very energetic!

R – Running.  I am a good runner.  Mom says I should pull a wagon or something.  That would be all right with me.

I would like to tag Cody Bear, and Molly, and Clumber (my new and incredibly smart friend) and some cats, too, if I can find some…
